Have you ever asked yourself:
How much self-confidence do I really have?
When I make a mistake, do I criticize and blame myself?
Do I change myself so that other people will love me?
Am I afraid of being judged by others?
Do I become overly dependent in romantic relationships?
Do I sacrifice myself to receive love and affection?
Do other people’s success, beauty, or power make me feel inferior?
This article has been written to help you understand yourself better, become aware of your behaviors and actions, and recognize the level of your self-confidence.
The purpose of this article is not to judge you.
The purpose is to help you become aware of yourself and begin investing in your personality and personal growth.
What Does High Self-Confidence Mean?
A person who has healthy and high self-confidence recognizes their own value.
They do not humiliate themselves.
When they make a mistake, they do not destroy themselves emotionally; instead, they learn from their mistake.
They admire beautiful and successful people, but they do not turn anyone into an idol.
They see other people’s success, but they do not forget their own value.
They respect others, and they also respect themselves.
They can say “no.”
They can have healthy boundaries.
They do not sacrifice themselves to receive love.
And they do not give up their personality and values just to receive approval from others.
How Does Low Self-Confidence Show Itself?
A person with low self-confidence may constantly criticize themselves.
They may need other people’s approval excessively.
They may be afraid of being judged by others.
They may compare themselves with others and always see other people as better than themselves.
They may become overly dependent in romantic relationships.
They may sacrifice themselves to receive love.
They may stay in a relationship that is not suitable for them because they are afraid of being alone.
They may have difficulty saying “no” and allow others to cross their boundaries.
They may see other people’s success and beauty as a threat to themselves.
And sometimes they may behave in ways to gain attention or affection and later feel upset with themselves.
Of course, having one or more of these behaviors does not necessarily mean that a person has low self-confidence. The purpose of this article is not diagnosis or labeling; the purpose is self-awareness and greater understanding.
My Personal Experience
I would like to share part of my personal experience with you because perhaps you have experienced similar behaviors in some part of your own life.
In the past, I wanted to be the center of attention for my husband and other people, and I would do many things to receive their approval.
Sometimes I was willing to wear clothes that I did not feel comfortable wearing.
I would color my hair to the point of damaging it.
I spent a large part of my income on cosmetics.
But today I understand that behind many of these behaviors, there was a deeper issue:
I did not believe in myself as much as I should have.
I saw my husband and even my colleagues as being more valuable than myself.
Although I was very beautiful, I could not see my own beauty.
I was extremely afraid that a beautiful woman would talk to my husband.
Today, when I look back, I understand that the main issue was not simply the beauty of that person or the behavior of others; it was the image I had of myself at that time.
When a person does not see themselves as sufficiently valuable from within, they may spend a great deal of energy seeking external approval.
They may constantly want to prove that they are beautiful, successful, lovable, and valuable.
And this strong need for approval can make a person exhausted.
A Person with High Self-Confidence Can Admire Others Without Forgetting Themselves
A person with healthy self-confidence, when they see a beautiful woman, does not say:
“She is more beautiful than me, so I have no value.”
When they see a successful person, they do not say:
“They are successful, so I am a failure.”
Instead, they say:
“She is beautiful, and I also have my own beauty.”
“They are successful, and I can become successful too.”
“I can admire other people without making myself smaller.”
This is one of the important signs of healthy self-confidence.
Another Important Experience from My Life
During my engagement, because of the cultural and social conditions in our country and the restrictions on communication between girls and boys before official marriage, because I had low self-confidence, I sometimes behaved in ways that I understand much better today.
For example, when my female colleague called me, sometimes I wanted to hide my phone and go to another room to talk so that my husband would become suspicious that perhaps another man was in my life.
In my mind, I wanted to later say to him:
“See? You were wrong about me.”
I wanted him to realize that his judgment of me was wrong.
Sometimes the situation would even reach the point where an argument and conflict would happen, and I wanted to prove my innocence and show him that he had judged me incorrectly.
At that time, I did not even realize that I was creating a situation in which I would eventually feel humiliated, hurt, and like a victim.
I could have shown him my phone from the beginning and behaved openly.
But at that time, I did not understand this behavioral pattern.
Today, when I look back, this experience has taught me a very important lesson:
If we do not understand our own behaviors, we may unconsciously create situations that cause us suffering.
Now Ask Yourself These Questions
Take a notebook and honestly answer these questions:
Where have I allowed myself to be disrespected?
Where have I sacrificed myself to receive love?
Where have I been afraid of other people’s judgment?
Where have I behaved in a way that was not truly consistent with my personality simply to receive attention?
Where have I compared myself with others?
Where has another person’s success or beauty made me see myself as inferior?
Where have I given up part of myself because I was afraid someone would leave me?
When I make a mistake, how do I speak to myself?
These questions are not for blaming yourself.
These questions are for understanding yourself.

Enjoy Being Alone with Yourself
One important sign of a healthy relationship with yourself is being able to enjoy being alone with yourself.
Create time for yourself.
Read.
Write.
Learn.
Walk.
Spend quiet time with God.
Plan for your future.
And gradually learn that you do not constantly need other people’s presence and approval to feel valuable.

You no longer enter a relationship or remain in a relationship that is not suitable for you simply because you are afraid of being alone.
Have Standards for Yourself When Choosing a Marriage Partner
When getting married, have standards for yourself.
Choose a person who inspires your growth and motivation, not someone who becomes an obstacle to your progress.

Believe in yourself.
You can make tremendous progress.
You can accomplish great things.
You can learn.
You can grow.
You can increase your income.
You can build your own business.
You can change your personality.
You are much more powerful than you may believe today.
